Newsletter for the week of December 17th

December 17, 2018

Memory work:
There is no memory work this week.  J

Dear Parents,
Here we are in our last week before the Christmas break.  The children are certainly excited!  Tonight is our Advent service at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. Due to the construction, parking will be a challenge.  Please feel free to park in The Magic House lot or Nipher’s lot both of which are across the street from Concordia. The children are to meet Mrs. Klug and me in the Concordia Center at 6:25.  Please make sure that your child has used the bathroom before meeting us.  After service, please meet your child where we are sitting.  This is always a special worship event in the lives of our CCLS families. Dress for the evening is dressy church clothes.
Today and Wednesday are our last country reports.  The students have all done an exceptional job on their posters and their reports.  Now it is time to return all of the country books to the school library.  Please have your child bring those back tomorrow.  Thank you!
The end of the quarter is this Friday, so please send in your Church and Sunday School form as well as your service project form.
Friday is our last day.  It is a full day of school with the Christmas Party at two o’clock.  Thanks so much to our parents for planning our party and to all of the parent helpers who will be here to help us celebrate. Friday is a FREE DRESS DAY thanks to all of you who brought in shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child and canned goods for Kirk Kare.
We just received some exciting news.  We will welcome a new student to our class on Monday, January 7th.  Her name is Alaina Sanders.  She is visiting with us today and will officially start after break.
I wish each of you a very Blessed Christmas.  Whether you are traveling or staying at home, I hope that you find time to relax and to enjoy your family. I will be taking a before Christmas trip to Chicago to see the Kentucky Wildcats play basketball against North Carolina. Then back here to celebrate Christmas with my St. Louis family and friends. My Kentucky daughter and her family will be here on the 26th to celebrate and then on the 31st. I will fly to Philadelphia to spend some time with my 97 year old father.
We are back together again on Monday, January 7th.  God’s Blessings from all of us to all of you.

Yours in our newborn Savior,
Janet

Newsletter for the week of December 10, 2018

Memory work:  (This is part 2 of the words we will say at the Advent service. Some students said it last week, so they do not have to say it this week.)

But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

December 10, 2018

Dear Parents,
We are now two weeks away from our Christmas break!   There are so many things to do!  We will continue our Christmas around the world country presentations.  The country reports that we have heard so far have been excellent.  I am sure that this week’s reports will also be great.
In math, we are getting into the swing of adding two-digit numbers with “carrying” (regrouping). We are also starting to work with the minus facts, beginning with minus 1 and minus 0, the really easy ones.
Of course in religion, the Christmas story will be our focus for the next week.  What a wonderful story it is AND what a blessing it is that we can share this story with those around us each and every day.
Any Scholastic book orders are due on or before this Wednesday.  You may place them on line or send the order with a check to me. I will place the order Wednesday evening and the books will be here before the break.
Next Monday evening, December 17th, is our annual K-8 Advent service at Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood. The service is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.  The children are to meet Mrs. Klug and me in the Concordia Center by 6:25. Please make sure that your child has used the bathroom before meeting us.  We will sit together as a class.  After the service, please meet your child where we are sitting. This is a worship service. It is always a special worship event in the lives of our CCLS families. Afterwards, there will be a bake sale with special treats for your holiday functions.
The end of the second quarter is next Friday, the 21st.  I will need to have your child’s church and Sunday school attendance form and your child’s service project form turned in on or before that day.  Thanks so much.  I am planning to work on the report cards over the break.  They will be released on Friday, January 11th.

Have a wonderful week!
Janet

Newsletter for the week of December 3rd

Memory Work:  This is our recitation for the Advent service on December 17th. The students may say all of it this week or they may say part A this week and part B next week.
            Part A:
And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night.  An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.

Part B:
But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.  Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.  This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

December 3, 2018

Dear Parents,
This afternoon your children will be sharing the good news of Christmas with the residents of Laclede Groves Nursing Home. I know that the residents will appreciate hearing their angelic voices.
The season of Advent has begun and this means that our congregations have midweek Advent services.  Here at Webster Gardens, there is an Advent service at 3:45 for the next three Wednesdays.  We will have inside pick-up on those Wednesdays as the parking lot fills up quickly with worshippers.  Please consider joining the Webster Gardens families for these special services.
This week (through Wednesday) the children are asked to bring in canned goods for Kirk Kare.  Canned vegetables, macaroni and cheese and boxes of cereal are all items that are needed for the Kirk Kare pantry that serves people in our community who are in need of food.
The book orders are coming home today. Please place your order by Wednesday, December 12th so that the order is back before our Christmas Break. You may order online at Scholastic.com.  The initial password is GL4JP and then you can set up your own password.
This Wednesday we will begin our country reports.  Your child should be able to talk about their country using their poster as a guide. The presentation should be no more than five minutes.  We will allow three questions after each presentation. Students are welcome to add to their report by dressing in a local costume, bringing items to show and/or bringing a treat to share. I will do a video recording of each and place it on your child’s Seesaw account.

As we continue through these busy weeks, may we all keep in mind the true meaning of Christmas.

Newsletter for the week of November 26th

Memory work:
The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.    Psalm 145:18

November 26, 2018

Dear Parents,
Welcome back!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I enjoyed spending lots of quality time with my St. Louis family and friends.  Now we have four weeks and until our Christmas break begins. These will be very busy times!
This week we will take a quick look at our government and at rules and laws in our Social Studies curriculum. Then, next week we will begin our Christmas around the World unit with our country reports.  Please let me know if you need any additional resources or assistance. Mrs. Ladd shared with me a website to help with Christmas traditions.  The web address is www.whychristmas.com.  Also, if you need other country information, go to Mrs. Ladd’s blog page (click on her name on the CCLS website), click on her websites tab and scroll down to see all of the country links that she has listed.
This Wednesday, we will take an afternoon field trip to Global Foods grocery store in Kirkwood (located on North Kirkwood Road next to Walgreen’s).  This is a very interesting store with foods from all over the world.  The purpose of the trip is to see the variety of foods and to allow the students to look for and possibly purchase foods from their country or a food that they would like to try. It is also a good lesson in spending money and receiving change. It is suggested that each student bring $3.00-$5.00 for spending money. I have several parents who are joining us or meeting us there to help with the shopping.  We can use as many assistants as possible.  Just let me know if you will be joining us.  We will leave school around 12:30 and arrive at the store at 12:45.  We will spend about an hour there.
In math, we will finish up our addition fact review and move on to subtraction.  We will also be working with polygons this week as well as measuring line segments.
Next Monday, December 3rd, we will be going to Laclede Groves Nursing Home to sing some Christmas songs for the residents.  It is always very warm there, so please dress your child in short sleeves and/or layers to be peeled off as your child gets warm. Our plans are to leave at 1:40 and to return by 2:45.
Santa’s Workshop is next week and we will be shopping on either Thursday or Friday.   More information will follow about that.
This week and into next week, we will be collecting canned goods for Kirk Kare.  I have challenged the students to bring in at least 4 items each and we should easily meet our school goal of 1200 cans.  These items may come to school at any time.
Remember that the end of the quarter is December 21st.  That means that all of the service project sheets should be turned in before the Christmas break.  At this time of year, I am sure that there are lots of service opportunities.  Have fun completing your project.
I was once again reminded of what a very special place our school is when I read a Family Circus cartoon.  The little girl arrives home crying and says "I needed a hug at school today, Mommy... But Mrs. Clarke said she's not allowed to do that." How special it is that we can begin and end our day with hugs, sharing God's love with each other, here at CCLS.
Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of November 12th

Memory work:
You are my God, and I will praise you;
you are my God, and I will exalt you.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his love endures forever. Psalm 118: 28, 29

November 12, 2018

Dear Parents,
Tis the season of Thanksgiving!  We have so many things to be thankful for, including our country and the freedom to worship our God. Thank you for sharing your children with us!  They are such a special gift from God.
Remember that if you have a shoebox donation for Operation Christmas Child, it is to be turned in on Wednesday.  The instructions were sent home last week. We are hoping to fill the altar area with more than one hundred boxes of gifts.
This Sunday we will be celebrating CCLS Sunday at the Lutheran Church of Webster Gardens.  CCLS will be celebrated at both the 8:00 and 10:45 services.  I hope that many of you will be able to join us on Sunday.
We have two field trips scheduled after the Thanksgiving break.  On Wednesday, November 28th, the second graders will be traveling to Global Foods Market at 12:30, to learn about the variety of foods they have from many countries. The students will be encouraged to look for food from their country.  They should bring along some money to shop. $3.00 is usually enough to buy a little something.  We do need parent helpers for this trip.  Parents are welcome to join us for the bus ride or to meet us at Global Foods at 12:45. We will be there for about an hour.  Please let me know if you can join us.
On Monday, December 3rd, we will be traveling to Laclede Groves Home in the afternoon to sing some Christmas carols.  We will leave around 1:30 and be back by 2:45. The home tends to be very warm.  I would suggest that the students wear a cooler uniform shirt so that they are comfortable while they sing.
The children are off all of next week for the Thanksgiving break.  The teachers will be attending the LCMS Missouri District Educators’ Conference at the Lake of the Ozarks on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
I hope that each of you has a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.  Thanks to God for all of the blessings that he has given to us.
Thanks for reading.
Yours in Him,
Janet Leet

Memory Work:

The tenth commandment:  You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

November 5, 2018

Dear Parents,
The weeks of November are flying by.  We have this week and next week and then we are off for the entire week of Thanksgiving.
In math this week, we have moved on to the addition facts of 12.  We are working on counting money (specifically nickels), making and reading graphs, and ordering two-digit numbers.
Last week we studied about Martin Luther and the Reformation. Now we will study some more Old Testament stories before we move on to the Christmas story.
In Social Studies we will talk about our early American history including the First Thanksgiving. Thank you for sending in your child’s country requests for the country projects.  I have assembled the schedule and attached it to instructions for the project. This will be sent home in your child’s take-home folder. I will send home the poster board this week as well.  Even though these are not due until after Thanksgiving, it is always good to get a head start.  Have fun working on this project together.
The November book orders are coming home today.  Please have any orders completed by November 16th.  You may order online or you may complete the paper order and send it in to me.  If you would like any books held for gifts, just let me know.
Remember that if you have a shoebox donation for Operation Christmas Child, it is to be turned in next Wednesday, November 14th.  A brochure will come home this week. We are hoping to fill the altar area with many boxes on the 14th.  The middle school leadership team has challenged the students to collect 300 boxes.  We can do it!
Sunday, November 18th, is CCLS Sunday at The Lutheran Church of Webster Gardens. CCLS Sunday will be celebrated at both the 8:15 and 10:45 services.  You are invited to join us for either service.  If you are searching for a church home, you are encouraged to visit Webster on the 18th to see if this is a good fit for you and your family.
Thanks for reading. Blessings on your week.

Yours in Him,
Janet Leet

Eighth commandment:  You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
Ninth commandment:  You shall not covet your neighbor's house.

October 29, 2018

Dear Parents,
Happy Reformation! Happy Halloween!  I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to come to school for your conference. The students did a great job of leading their conferences.  I hope that you enjoyed this experience as much as we did.  We loved watching the students as they took ownership for their learning. It was a pleasure to meet with each one of you.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact Mrs. Klug or me at any time.
Thank you also for your participation in our annual book fair. It was a very successful event.  We have some new books for our classroom and for our school library thanks to your generosity.
This week we will spend a week talking about rules and laws in social studies.  Then we will spend the time before Thanksgiving working on our Now and Then social studies unit.
In math, we are continuing to work on our addition facts.  We will continue to work with counting dimes and pennies.  If your child has not returned the container with 10 nickels and 6 quarters and returned it to school, please do so this week.  We will return the money to you at the end of the school year.
It is time to put together the Operation Christmas Child shoe boxes.  The brochure with information about the boxes will come home soon. If you are choosing to participate, please have your child bring in his/her donation on Wednesday, November 14th.
Coming home today with your child is a note about selecting the country that your child would like to study and present a report about in December.  Please return this selection sheet on or before Friday, November 2nd. Next week I will share the list of countries and the report dates with you. We will begin the reports the week of December 3rd.
Looking ahead, remember that the CCLS Advent worship service will be held in the Concordia Center on Monday evening, December 17th.  This is always an awesome service to be a part of as we prepare for our Savior’s birth.
Enjoy this beautiful fall weather week.

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

October 22, 2018

Dear Parents,
Thanks to the parents who organized our wonderful harvest party last Friday.  The children had a wonderful time with crafts, games and snacks. We do love to party!
This is a very different week schedule-wise.  We have class for full days through Wednesday. Our student-led/parent-teacher conferences begin Thursday afternoon, continue into Thursday evening and then conclude on Friday morning. Mrs. Klug and I are looking forward to meeting with your second grader and each of you for these conferences. Your second grader has been preparing for this event. Please be sure to bring along all of your questions, comments and concerns AND of course, your second grade student. Your conference time was in your child’s report card.  There is a master copy posted by our classroom door.  If you need to make a change, please jot a note to me or feel free to call me.
Our annual Book Fair will be held this week.  Our class will “shop” tomorrow morning.  A flyer came home last week listing some of the books that will be for sale.  If you would like for your child to purchase any books, you may send in cash or a check (payable to CCLS) with your child tomorrow.  If you send a check, be sure to let us know a limit for the check.  The book fair will be open through Thursday at noon.  Tuesday evening is the Candy Corn Festival (for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students) from 6-7:30 and the book fair will be open at that time. Wednesday morning, the 24th, is breakfast with a buddy and the Book Fair will be open that morning beginning at 7:30 a.m.  Your child is invited to bring an adult with them to enjoy a breakfast treat and to shop at the book fair.
In math, we will be moving on to the facts that equal 11.  This week we will work more with counting money (dimes and pennies) and do some line measuring.  Keep practicing those addition facts at home.  Also, it is time to fill the nickels and quarters container.  If you have not sent it back, please do so this week. Each child needs 10 nickels and 6 quarters to use during this year.  The coins will come back home in May.
Remember that school will be dismissed at 12:00 this Thursday. Be sure to send along a morning snack. Also, there is no school on Friday due to the conferences. (Kid Kare will be open Thursday from noon until six.  Be sure to register your child through the link with the email about Kid Kare that was sent last week.  The link was also included in The Charger newsletter last Friday.  There will not be Kid Kare on Friday.   Have a wonderful fall week! See you with your child on Thursday or Friday.

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Dear Parents,
Happy fall!  It is so nice to have the cooler temperatures!  Please be sure to have your child’s sweaters and sweatshirts labeled with their name (last name is fine) so that we can match up owners with garments!
Tomorrow we will head to Powell Hall to hear the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.  This is a morning field trip and we will be back by lunchtime. Thanks to the adults who are going with us.
This Wednesday afternoon, the teachers will be meeting to schedule the parent-teacher-student conferences.  Please be sure that you returned the conference request sheet tomorrow if you have not already sent it in, or send me an email with your preferences.  A paper copy of your child’s report card will be coming home on Friday.  Inside the report card envelope will be a note with your conference time listed on it. There will be lots of first quarter work that will come home as well.
In math, we are moving on to the facts that equal 10.  This week we will work more with counting money (dimes and pennies) and do some line measuring.  Keep practicing those addition facts at home.
Remember to send back the coins for math.  I will keep them locked in my cabinet when we are not using them and I will return them to the students at the end of the year.
Our annual Book Fair will be held next week.  Our class will “shop” on Tuesday.  A flyer will be coming home listing some of the books that will be for sale.  If you would like for your child to purchase any books, you may send in cash or a check (payable) to CCLS. If you choose to send in a blank check, be sure to let us know a limit for the check.  Tuesday evening, the 23rd, is the Candy Corn Festival (for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students) from 6-7:30 and the book fair will be open at that time. Memory work: Third commandment:  Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Fourth commandment:  Honor your father and your mother.

Dear Parents,
Believe it or not, this is the last week of the first quarter.  Please send in your child’s church and Sunday School attendance sheet this week so that I can record it on the report card. Also, if your child has not brought back the Service Project sheet, please send that in this week as well.
This is National Fire Prevention week.  Today we had a fire drill and  the children learned a lot about fire safety from the Webster Groves fire department. Remember to have a conversation with your children about where a safe meeting place is outside your home in the event of a fire.  Also, check those smoke detectors this week!
Our first CCLS University session will be held this Thursday, OCTOBER 11, from 6:30-7:30 pm on our elementary campus at Webster Gardens focusing on the topic of Video Games and your children.  Babysitting will be available at no charge. (Please do let us know that you are coming by clicking on the reservation form on the CCLS website.)
Later this week, a conference request note will be sent home with each child. Remember that your child will be leading the conference (on October 25th and 26th), so pick a convenient time for this. Please fill out the form and return it on or before next Wednesday, October 17th.  The teachers will be meeting on Wednesday afternoon, the 17th, to coordinate the conference times. It is very helpful if you send back a copy with each of your children at the Elementary campus. You may also e-mail your preferences to me. Your conference time will be sent home with the report card on October 19th.
Book orders are due on or before this Friday, the 12th.  You may order online or send your order to school.  The online order code is GL4JP.
Next Tuesday, October 16th, we will be taking a morning field trip to Powell Hall to hear the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra.  We will leave at 8:40 and be back before lunch (11:30).  The student cost is included in the tuition.
October 19th is the day of our Harvest Party.  The party will be at 2:00.  Thanks to Hannah’s Mom for coordinating the event and thanks to all of you who volunteered to help.  Please let Christine S. know if you are able to help fill any of the holes on the party grid.
Have a great week!
Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of October 1st

First Commandment:   You shall have no other Gods.
Second Commandment:  You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

October 1, 2018

Dear Parents,
Happy fall!  It was a wonderful weekend for the carnival.  Thank you for supporting this event for our school community.
This week for our memory work, we will begin learning the Ten Commandments.  When the children say the commandments, they should also say which commandment it is (i.e., “First Commandment:  You shall have no other Gods.)
Terrific Tuesday classes start tomorrow!  The classes conclude at 4:30. If your child will be participating in a Terrific Tuesday class, he/ she should be picked up promptly at 4:30 or he/she may use Kid Kare until pick-up. An email was sent with the door code for Terrific Tuesday participants.  Have fun!
In math, we have been working on solving problems with missing addends.  Specifically, we have been working on combinations that equal 8, 9, and 10.  Watch for the bags of fact cards that are coming home.  Please encourage your child to practice with these cards until he/she has mastered them.
In science we will continue our study of Pebbles, Sand and Silt with the in depth study of River Rocks. The children are really enjoying learning so much about rocks! This week we will be sorting rocks in several ways.
This would be a good time to check with your child about school supplies.  Many of the children seem to have exhausted that initial supply of pencils and need to bring some new ones.  The glue sticks are running low, too.  Please check with your child regarding any needed supplies.
New book orders are coming home today.  They are due on or before Friday, October 12th. You may order the books on line by going to www.scholastic.com/bookclubs  and follow the cues to order your books. Our class activation code is GL4JP and then you can select your own password and username.
Next Friday, October 12th, is the end of the first quarter!  That means that all Service Project forms are due next week as well as the Church and Sunday School attendance form.
Thanks for reading.  Have a great week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

PS  Next Monday is Mrs. Sanft’s (our teacher assistant) birthday.  We thought it would be fun to put together a snack basket for her.  If you would like to send in an extra snack for her to enjoy during her busy days, we will add it to the basket.  Thank you.

*WHAT TO LOOK FOR AT A STUDENT-LED CONFERENCE?
Students will take the lead as they introduce their parents, open with prayer, share examples of their academic progress and learning goals. Teachers will listen and serve as facilitators. Parents follow their student’s lead, listen intently, encourage explanations and provide positive feedback and support.

Newsletter for the week of September 24, 2018

Memory work:  God is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. Exodus 34:6
September 24, 2018

Dear Parents,
We certainly enjoyed our trip to the apple orchard last week, even though it was very warm!  On Wednesday we will cook with our apples. Hopefully, you found something yummy to make with your apples.
It is Carnival week!  This year because of the construction at Concordia, the carnival will be held at Lutheran High School South. The carnival starts on Friday at 5:00, is open until 10 that night and then continues on Saturday from 11-9.  The best ride deal for kiddos is the wrist band.  Children with the wrist band can ride all of the rides an unlimited number of times on Saturday from 11-6.  The wristbands are $27 if purchased ahead of time and $30 on Saturday.  Then there are games and food that you also need tickets in order to purchase or play.  Those tickets will be available for purchase at the carnival.  Hope to see you all there!
Please continue to review addition and subtraction flash cards to strengthen the math skills. The timed fact tests are becoming a little more challenging for many of the children.  This week we will continue working on the 9 and start talking about the “doubles plus one” facts.
Friday, October 12th, is  the last day of the first quarter.  The service project forms along with the church and Sunday school attendance forms are due on or before that day.
Our harvest party is scheduled for Friday, October 19th. The plans are being put together for this event.  A big thank you goes to Christina Stackle for organizing all of the teams for the special events throughout the year. Please let me know if you need any supplies for your event. We have lots of construction paper and other art supplies.
In a few weeks, it will be time for conferences.  The dates for the conferences are October 25th and October 26th.  This year, we will be using a blended approach to the conferences.  This means that the first part of the conference will be student-led (your child will be involved with this part of the conference).  Then, about halfway through the conference time, we will excuse the student and meet as parents and teachers to address any concerns that the parents may have.  Each week I will be sharing a little information with you about the conference. Here is the first tidbit.
The Student-Led Conference is an opportunity for our children to take the lead in providing evidence of their academic growth. Conference preparations and experiences allow our children to take responsibility for their learning and deepen their understanding of their work.
WHY PROMOTE STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES?
· SLCs focus on a student’s success in school and at home.
· SLCs promote three-way communication among students, teachers, and parents.
· SLCs foster student pride in reaching learning goals.
· SLCs establish clear targets for the school year.
We are very excited about these conferences. More information will come in next week’s newsletter.
Thanks for reading this note!  Have a great week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet
