Newsletter for the week of April 29th

April 29, 2019

Memory Work:
Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  Acts 2:38

Dear Parents,
What a busy, exciting week we had last week. Our chapel at Lutheran South went very well. Grandparents’ Day was very special. The Operetta was wonderful.  Now we are ready to finish the school year with lots of energy and activities.
What a busy month we have ahead of us! This Thursday is the National Day of Prayer.  We will meet with the other classes around the flagpole to share the Pledge of Allegiance, prayers and a song or two.
Our last field trip will be on Monday, May 20th.  We are scheduled to take a class at the Missouri Botanical Gardens at 9:30.  We will leave school around 9:00.  After the class, there will be a little time to explore the gardens.  Then, weather permitting, we will go to Tilles Park in Brentwood for a picnic lunch and to enjoy their playground.  We hope to be back at school around 2:00 p.m.  We will need parents to go with us.  You could join us just for the morning at the gardens, for the whole trip or meet us at the park for lunch.
Thanks to some who have sent in a favorite family recipe. I need each child to bring in a copy of a favorite family recipe that he/she really enjoys.  I would like to have these recipes this week. Feel free to send the recipe to me by email or a hard copy is fine, too. l will return the original copies to you in a few weeks.  Thanks!
This week we will conclude our unit on Economics and move into the last science unit on plants and animals.  We are continuing to learn our capital cursive letters.  In math, we are working to understand the concepts of multiplication.  This week we will be becoming familiar with times four facts and drawing arrays to help us figure out the facts.
You are invited to join us next Wednesday (May 8th) for chapel as this is the day that our class will be leading the chapel service at 8:30. Following the service, we will have our author celebration!  During this time, the children will be sharing the writing pieces that they have completed over this year. It would be wonderful if each child could have an adult present for the celebration. (We should be finished by 10:30).
The last book orders for the year are coming home this week.  Any orders need to be returned to me or placed on line (www.scholastic.com, class code GL4JP) by next Thursday, May 9th.
I am sure that you read the news from Mr. Pawlitz that Mrs. Klug and I will not be teaching second grade next year.  I will be moving into the full time elementary principal position and Mrs. Klug hopes to be involved at CCLS in a way to be determined that allows her more family time.  Thank you for all of your love and support during this year. This will be a big change for both of us! The call committee is being formed and we will start looking for the next great second grade teacher for CCLS.
Thanks for reading.  Have a great week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of April 23rd

Memory Work:

(The angel said), "Why do you seek the living among the dead?  He is not here, but has risen."  Luke 24: 5-6

Dear Parents,
He is risen!  He is risen indeed! What a glorious Easter weekend it was! I hope that all of you were able to join together with your families to celebrate.
Our congratulations to Shayde and his family on the birth of baby Everly!  New babies are so exciting (and change the family routines so dramatically)!
Tomorrow, the second grade classes will be presenting chapel at Lutheran High School South.  We will leave school at 10:00, present chapel around 10:30, and then return to school.  If any parents would like to meet us at South, that would be fine. If your child has a speaking part, please help him/her to review it this evening.  Thank you.
This week is an exciting week for the elementary students.  Thursday is our annual Grandparents’/Special Friends’ Day.  Any guests are welcome to join us in the morning.  The morning will start with coffee and fellowship in Friendship Hall.  There are two forty five minute sessions that grandparents may visit the classrooms.  If you have more than one child in the elementary building, the guests are welcome to divide their time among the students. The classroom activity times are 8:45 until 9:30 and 10:45 until 11:30. A chapel service will be held in between the two sessions at 9:45.  If the special guests would like to take their second grader to lunch off campus, they may do so at 11:30.  We are also offering a complementary lunch to those guests who would like to eat with us at 11:30 in the lunchroom.  Please be sure to have your child’s guests RSVP for that day, so that we know how many will be joining us.
It is also the week for our operetta. There will be a dress rehearsal of the operetta at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, the 25th.  That evening we will be performing “Oh Chicken of Little Faith” at 7:00.  All students should be in their classrooms at 6:45 p.m. Second graders are asked to wear dark pants or skirts (jeans are okay, too) for the performance that evening.  Their special chicken shirts will be in the classroom for them to put on when they arrive.  Then, they may take the shirts home. You may add these shirts to your child’s Friday t-shirt collection. (We will have rehearsals for the operetta each afternoon, so there will probably not be any math homework this week.)
I would like for each child to bring in a copy of a favorite family recipe which he/she really enjoys.  I would like to have these recipes during the next couple of weeks.  The recipe may be emailed to me, photocopied or written on any type of paper.   I will return the original copies to you in a few weeks.
Thanks for reading.  Have a great week.

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of April 15

April 15, 2019

Memory work:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  Romans 5:8

Dear Parents,
Holy Week is here. This is one of my favorite weeks to teach.  The children know the Passion story, love to hear it again and want to share it with others. Chapel this week will be on Thursday, which is Maundy Thursday.  The fourth graders will be presenting chapel at 8:30.  Then we will have an end of the day chapel service at 2:15.  The afternoon service will be a quiet, somber service remembering the events of Good Friday. You are welcome to join us for either or both of the services. There will be inside pick-up on Thursday afternoon.  We are encouraging everyone to come and leave quietly out of respect for our Savior, Jesus.
In math, we have moved on to adding and subtracting three-digit numbers. Most of the children are doing very well with this concept. A few are still working at recognizing when they need to regroup. Please take a few moments to look over your child’s homework each night.  You can help catch any errors and take the time to explain them to your child.
On Wednesday, April 24th, the second grade classes will go to Lutheran High School South to present a chapel service.  We will leave at 10:00 and be back by 11:15.  Some of the students in our class volunteered for speaking parts.  They received copies of the script today.  If possible, we would like the students to memorize their parts, or at least be extremely familiar with them so that they can say the words confidently.
Next week is our operetta week.  We will have rehearsals each day.  On Thursday (the 25th), there will be a dress rehearsal at 1:30 p.m. (Grandparents and others are welcome to join us for the dress rehearsal).  “Oh Chicken of Little Faith” will be presented by grades one through four on Thursday evening, April 25th at 7:00.  The students should come to the classrooms at 6:45 p.m.  Before that time they are to stay with their parents.
We do not have school on Good Friday or on Easter Monday. I hope that your family has a wonderful Easter!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of April 8th

Memory work: Hosanna to the Son of David.  Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.  Hosanna in the highest!    Matthew 21:9

April 8, 2019

Dear Parents,
With Cardinals baseball in full swing and the temperatures getting warmer, spring seems to be almost here.  This coming Sunday is Palm Sunday which is the beginning of Holy Week.  It is always a special time to be together as a Christian community.
Today we will welcome Ben’s dad to our class. He is going to make a presentation about economics this afternoon.  We will continue that unit through this week
Any Scholastic book orders are due by this Friday.  You may order online or send a paper order with a check to school.  There will be one more book order after this one.
On Wednesday, May 8th, our class will be presenting the chapel service at 8:30.  Then at 9:30 we will have our annual author celebration where the children will share with you what they have written throughout the year.  It is important that each child have a guest at the author event with whom they can share their writing.  Please mark your calendar and plan to join us on that day.
Looking ahead to our end of the year field trips, we are planning to go to the Botanical Gardens on Monday, May 20th   (from 9:00 until 2:15).  We are also hoping to go to the St. Louis Storytelling Festival at the beginning of May, but that date has not been set yet.
Next week is Holy Week.  We will have school through Thursday.  Then we will not have school on Good Friday or on Easter Monday.  The week following Easter is our operetta week and also Grandparents’/Special Friends’ Day on Thursday, the 25th.  What a busy time for all of us!
God’s blessings on your week.

Yours in Him,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of April 1st

April 1, 2019

Jesus said, “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
John 13:34

Dear Parents,
Happy April Fool’s Day!  It is always fun to see what second grade humor comes with this day.  Last Friday, I told them we would have five homework assignments on Monday, April 1st.  It took them a few minutes to figure out that I was joking as it would be April Fool’s Day!
A big thank you goes to Mrs. Spangler for spending Friday afternoon with us and teaching us how to make prints.  The prints are beautiful and will be displayed shortly.  We all learned a lot!
Our math lessons will focus on mixed numbers and money amounts as well as multiplying by 5.  In social studies we will talk about wants and needs as we continue our study of the economy.  Please remind your child to practice his/her memory verse each day and then be ready to say it on Friday.  Some of the children are trying to memorize the verses at the last minute.  The goal is to commit to memory the words from the Bible.  These words will then be a help and comfort to us as our life goes on.
The April book orders are coming home this week.  Please place any orders on or before Friday, April 12th.  Again, if you need any books held aside, just let me know and I will get them to you without your child knowing.
Last week in an email, you should have received the invitation for Grandparents’ and Special Friends’ Day.  Please be sure to share this with those who might be able to join us on April 25th for that special day.  That is also the day of the performance of our grade 1-grade 4 musical.  We will have a dress rehearsal at 1:30 and then the performance that evening at 7:00.  This day is always a highlight of the school year, so be sure to mark your calendars!
Thanks for reading.  Have a great week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet
