Newsletter for the week of January 28th

Memory work:
Let the children come to Me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.
Mark 10:14

January 28, 2019

Dear Parents,
It is National Lutheran Schools Week!  We thank God for our wonderful school with outstanding families and dedicated teachers.  We have many things planned for this week. First of all, each day has a special dress theme.  The days are:
Monday:  Pajama and comfy clothes day
Tuesday: Favorite sports team day
Wednesday: Dress up from a decade in the last 100 years
Thursday: Tourist Day- Wear your favorite vacation t-shirt
Friday:  Favorite Book Character Day-  Bring (or order from school) a sack lunch
and your favorite picture book to share during a book picnic!  (If a child chooses not to participate in the special dress day, he/she should wear their normal school uniform.)
Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the 100th day of school.  I would like for each child to bring 100 things that they are willing to share with the children in the class for our celebration. (They can be edible (individually wrapped, please) or non-edible.) I am sure that everyone will come home with quite a collection!  It will be a great equal sharing activity.
Wednesday morning, February 6th will be our next field trip.  We will leave around 9:05 and travel to Concordia Publishing House to learn about the book-making process. It is always a very interesting trip. We will return to school by 11:30.  Parents/grandparents are welcome to join us.  Please let us know if you are coming on the trip.
Remember that we will not have school on Monday February 18th.  Actually, the teachers will be involved with some professional development in the morning.  In the afternoon, we will be available for parent- teacher conferences.  Please let us know if you would like to meet with us. We are available from 1:00 until 3:30 that afternoon and right now our schedule is wide open.  Of course, we can always schedule a conference on another day and time if the 18th isn’t a good day for you.
One of the fund-raisers for our eighth grade trip is the selling of candy-grams.  The forms are coming home soon. For one dollar, you can have a candy bar delivered to your child on February 14th, with a message from you.  Your child can also send one to friend(s). The forms will also be available at the CCLS website as well. Please submit candygram orders on or before Tuesday, February 12th.
Thursday, February 14th is our Valentine’s Day celebration!  I am sure that we will have a delightful day together! Second graders are very serious about all of the cards that they receive.  They will read them very carefully. A big thank you to our party planners and to all of our parent-helpers for making our Valentine’s Day party such fun. (A list of classmates will come home with your child.)
The February book orders are coming home this week.  If you would like to order any books, please do so by next Friday, February 8th.  If you order online, our initial class code is GL4JP and then you can set up your own code. Happy reading!
Thanks for reading!  Have a great week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet

Newsletter for the week of January 22nd

Memory work:
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

January 22, 2019

Dear Parents,
Happy Tuesday!   I hope that everyone had a wonderful three-day weekend and were able to keep warm.
Remember to return the empty large brown envelope and the brown report card envelope (be sure to sign it) as soon as possible.  You may keep all of the contents. Also, if you have no need for the glass jar that the brownie mix was is, that can come back to me.
In math, we are working on mastering our subtraction facts.  The zeros, ones and twos were pretty easy.  The threes are more challenging now we are working on the minus 4 facts.  Please watch the math papers that are coming home.  Your child may need a little assistance in mastering these facts. There will be a set of flashcards coming home for each set of subtraction facts.  Please use these to play a game or two of concentration which will help review the math facts as well as work on some memory skills. It is important that the facts are memorized.
Looking ahead, next week is National Lutheran Schools’ Week.  Our teachers are working on making each day special, including some special dress days. Here are the planned dress days:
Monday:  Pajama and comfy clothes day
Tuesday: Favorite sports team day
Wednesday: Dress up from a decade in the last 100 years
Thursday: Tourist Day- Wear your favorite vacation t-shirt
Friday:  Favorite Book Character Day-  Bring (or order from school) a sack lunch
and your favorite picture book to share during a book picnic!  (If a child chooses not to participate in the special dress day, he/she should wear their normal school uniform.)
This coming Sunday is CCLS Sunday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.  We will gather together for their 9:00 a.m. worship service and then there is a pancake breakfast following the worship service.  You are invited to join us.
On Monday, the 28th, we will be working on a service project making “Birthday Bags” for Operation Food Search. These “celebrations in a bag” are shared with needy families to help make a child’s birthday a special day.  Each grade is asked to bring specific items for the bags. The second graders are asked to bring in cake mixes and cans of frosting. Feel free to bring several items if you wish.  Please send the items in tomorrow, Wednesday, so that we can plan how many more we need to purchase to make our goal. Our goal is to make 100 bags!
Tuesday, January 29th, will be the 100th day of school for this year (provided that we do not miss a day of school between now and then).  I would like for each child to bring 100 things that they are willing to share with the children in the class for our celebration. (They can be edible (individually wrapped, please) or non-edible.) I am sure that everyone will come home with quite a collection!  It will be a great equal sharing activity.
Thanks for reading this letter.  God's blessings on your week!
Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Dear Parents,
Wow!  What a weekend we all experienced.  I hope that your trip home on Friday was uneventful.  My son-in-law, with my two year old grand twins, was in the traffic jam on I-44 east bound.  After nine hours in the car, they returned home at 11:30 p.m.!  God is so good as he watched over them and all of the others who were stranded!!
Hopefully, you received your child’s report card on Friday along with an envelope full of papers.  If you have any questions about your child's grades, please feel free to contact Mrs. Klug or me. We would be happy to meet with you in the next couple of weeks.  There are no scheduled parent-teacher conferences for this quarter, but we are always available to meet with you.  Just let us know what days and times are convenient for you. Once you have finished looking at the materials, please send the big brown envelope (empty) back and the signed report card envelope back, so that we can use them again next quarter. All of the children deserve a lot of praise for an excellent job during the second quarter.
Last Friday, we had a special assembly by the Mad Science group.  Mad Science classes will be a part of our winter Terrific Tuesday classes.  The Terrific Tuesday classes will begin on January 22nd. The class information and registration were sent out by email last Friday.
Just a reminder that a chapel offering is collected every Wednesday. Please remind your child to bring an offering to school each Wednesday.
The January book order forms are came home last week. Any book orders should be turned in by this Friday, January 18th.  Speaking of January 18th, that is our annual CCLS Family Bingo Night.  It is held at the middle school campus (Concordia Lutheran Church in Kirkwood) and is always a great night of family fun. It starts with an optional pizza dinner at 6:00 and then we play bingo for an hour beginning at 6:30.  Everyone is asked to bring a $1 prize for the prize table. Check the Charger for the RSVP form.  Hope to see you there!
Thanks for reading this letter. Have a great week and a fun three-day weekend! (We do not have school on Monday in honor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.) It looks like there is the possibility of more snow for next weekend!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Dear Parents,
Happy New Year!  I know I am glad to be back into the school routine.  I hope that everyone had a relaxing and refreshing Christmas holiday. I had a wonderful holiday together with my family. On the 26th, my younger daughter and her family arrived from Lexington, Kentucky.  It was so much fun being with the two sets of grand-twins. On the 31st, I flew to Philadelphia to spend four days with my 97 year-old father. My sister and her family were also there, so we had some good family time.  Dad always amazes me with his mental sharpness.
Today we welcomed Alaina to our class! We are happy to add her to our second grade class and to our CCLS family.
Mrs. Klug and I would like to thank you for all of the Christmas remembrances! They were all very special. A big thank you goes to many parents for planning the Christmas party. It was such a success! Thanks to everyone who contributed items for the party and to the people who were able to be here to help with the party.  By the way, how were your sand art brownies? If you have no need for the jar, feel free to send it back to me and I will save it for next year.
I am sending home the January book orders this week.  If you would like to order some books, please have the order forms and checks back to me by Friday, January 18th. Once again checks may be made payable to Scholastic Books. (Remember that you can also order the books on line at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs. The initial parent activation code is GL4JP and then you can set your codes.). (Each child received a book coupon from me as a Christmas gift. It was inside of a Christmas card from me. When your child decides on a book to spend the coupon on, complete the paper coupon and turn it in to me. It can be redeemed any time before the end of May.) Happy shopping and Happy Reading!!!!
In math we will continue to work on adding with regrouping and reviewing all of the subtraction facts.  We will now go back to a science unit about solids and liquids.  There are lots of fun hands-on experiences with this unit.
Tomorrow evening, Tuesday, January 8th, we will be hosting our Kindergarten Round-up Night.  This night is for the students who will be coming to kindergarten in the fall of 2019 and for their parents.  If your family fits into this category, please consider joining us for this fun evening.  Dinner is offered at 6:00 and the program goes from 6:30 until 7:30. Please do RSVP through the CCLS website.
Please continue to send your children dressed for outdoor play. We will go out most days that the temperature allows for a breath of fresh air. With the fluctuating St. Louis weather, any given day could have both inside and outside recesses.
Remember that we have two full weeks of school and then we are off Monday, January 21st for the Martin Luther King holiday.

Yours in our newborn Savior,
Janet Leet
