Newsletter for the week of February 25th

Memory work:
The Lord's Prayer:  Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever.  Amen

Dear Parents,
Welcome to a full week of second grade!  It will be good to have three full weeks of school before spring break!  The students did a wonderful job in the “Walk of Fame” last Friday afternoon. Their posters looked great and they really knew the facts about their famous Americans.  Thank you for all of the help you offered to your child at home for this project. Be sure to check out the oral reports that are posted on Seesaw.  They are awesome!
Remember that if your child chose to participate in the “Read to Succeed” program to earn a ticket to Six Flags, those forms were due today.  We will accept them tomorrow as well.
This coming Saturday (March 2nd) is the Lutheran South Scholar Bowl at Lutheran High School South (located on Tesson Ferry Road just south of the intersection of Gravois and Tesson Ferry).  The first session is at 9:15 a.m. and then there are a variety of activities all morning until the closing at 11:30.  Good luck to the participants from our classroom. William and Mitchell will be competing in the second grade spelling bee.  Alli and Ben will have their artwork displayed in the art show. The second grade spelling bee begins at 9:15 in the Jubel Student Help Center (which I think is new name for the  library). The artwork from grades 1 through 8 will be on display throughout the morning.
This coming Sunday, March 3rd, is CCLS Sunday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church on Litzsinger Road in Brentwood.  You are welcome to join us as we celebrate our partnership with Mt. Calvary.
The March book orders will come home this week.  They are due back on or before Monday, March 11th. The website for ordering is www.scholastic.com/parentordering.  Let me know if you would like for me to keep any of the books aside for gifts.
Looking ahead:  The teachers are planning an elementary literacy night for Thursday, March 28th.  More information will be published soon.  I just wanted to give you a “save the date” notice.God’s blessings on your week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of February 19th

Memory work: (Many of the students said the whole creed last week, so they do not have to say any memory work this week. Others chose to say the first half last week and are saying the second half this week.)
The Apostles’ Creed: I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen

Dear Parents,
Happy Tuesday! It was great seeing so many of you at the auction Saturday evening.  While we do not have the final numbers, it appears that once again our families truly blessed CCLS with their generosity.   We have a four day week this week!  Hopefully, we will not have to worry about winter weather this week!
In math, we are continuing to learn how to regroup (borrow) when subtracting.  Most of the children are doing very well with this concept.  It is one of the hardest things that we learn in second grade!  We are working on the minus 7 facts this week.  These can be tricky! Please encourage your child to complete the fact sheets each night, even though they don’t have to bring the sheet back to school. Also, take a few moments to look over your child’s homework each night.  You can help catch any errors and take the time to explain them to your child.
This Friday is a fun day for the second grade classes.  In the morning, Mrs. Ladd’s class will have their famous American showcase in the hallways.  This living museum will be open from 10:30-11:30.  You are invited to visit during that time.
Then in the afternoon, our class will set up their Famous American reports in the hall for everyone to see.  Remember that your child may bring their costumes and props for this event. The time for this display is from 2:15 until 2:50.  Again, you are invited to see all of the wonderful famous American projects that the children completed.
Have you told anyone about CCLS recently? Our families are our best advertisers.  Spread the good word. Thanks for reading! Have a great week!

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of February 11th

Memory work: (This may be said in two parts, this Friday and next Friday or all together this week.)

Dear Parents,
Happy Valentine’s Day week.  This is always a fun week for our second graders!  Remember that if you want to send candy grams, the forms and dollars are due tomorrow.
Thanks to all of the parents who have planned and are helping with our Valentine’s Day party this Thursday. It promises to be a fun day! The students should bring their valentine cards to school on Thursday.  We made bags for our cards in art last week, so we are ready to go.
This Friday, we will have another author visit courtesy of The Novel Neighbor in Webster.  (If you have not visited this book store, plan to do so.  It is a wonderful local store!).  Mike Wahnoutka is the author and illustrator of more than 20 children books.  We are excited to hear him share with us about his career.
This week in math, we will continue working on subtracting two-digit numbers.  This is always a challenge for second graders. We continue to say our little rhyme to help us know when to regroup. (More on the top, no need to stop.  More on the floor, go next door. Get ten more.  Number’s the same.  Zero’s the game.)  This is where knowing those subtraction facts really becomes important. Please take a few moments to look over your child’s homework each night. You can help catch any errors and take the time to explain them to your child. I will continue to send home more subtraction flash cards for you to use at home.  They are yours to keep and to use. A family game of concentration can be so much fun!  Practice makes perfect!
We are continuing to learn our lower case letters in cursive writing. The handwriting papers are really lovely.  We are saving them at school to make a book.
Last call for any Scholastic book orders.  I will submit the order tomorrow morning.
Remember that the students do not have school next Monday, the 18th, due to the President’s Day holiday. The teachers will work on some professional development in the morning.  Then, in the afternoon, the teachers will be on campus for the optional parent-teacher conferences.  A conference request form is coming home today.  Please send it back tomorrow if you would like a conference.  If Monday afternoon does not work for you, we will happily find another day and time that will work.
Thanks for reading! Have a great week! Hope to see you all at the auction on Saturday.

Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

Newsletter for the week of February 4th

Memory work:  Sing to the Lord, all the earth; proclaim His salvation day after day.
1 (First) Chronicles 16:23

February 4, 2019

Dear Parents,
We are hoping to have a week when everyone is better and back at school.  We had a wonderful National Lutheran Schools Week. Now it is back to our normal uniforms and hopefully, a five-day week.
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and everyone is so excited!!!  We are looking forward to a wonderful party on Valentine’s Day. Thank you so much to all of the parents who are organizing and contributing to the party. The children may bring their valentine cards in on that day. (The class list of names is at the bottom of this letter.) We will make a bag to hold the valentines in class this Friday.  If you wish to send any candygrams, they are due in the office on Tuesday, February 12th. (Candygram forms are coming home today.)
This Wednesday we will take a field trip to Concordia Publishing House to see how books go through the publishing process.  We will leave school at 9:05 and be back by 11:30 (in time for lunch).  Parents are welcome to join us.  Just let us know if you are coming.
This week on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the first graders will be holding their annual garage sale.  This happens before school in the stained glass hallway.  The items are priced from 50 cents to possibly $5.00. There will also be a bake sale (as long as the items last) at lunch time.  Baked goods are 50 cents per bag.  The proceeds will go towards the tuition costs of the first grade sponsored students at CCLS-Uganda.
On Friday, February 15th, we are thrilled to have another author visit with us. His name is Mike Wohnoutka.  He has written and illustrated several books for younger children.  The form to order books came home on Friday.
The February book orders need to be turned in on or before this Friday, February 8th. You may also order the books on line (www.scholastic.com/parentordering ).
This week in math, we will work with dimes and pennies to understand how to subtract with regrouping (i.e. borrowing). Then we will do more and more of those problems just on paper, without the coins.  We will learn a little saying to help us remember what to do. (More on the top, no need to stop…More on the floor, go next door, get ten more.  Number’s the same? Zero’s the game.). Keep practicing those subtraction facts each day.
Monday, February 18th (Presidents’ Day) is a professional development day for the teachers (no school for the students).  The teachers will be available in the afternoon that day (1:00-3:30) for Parent- Teacher conferences.  A form will be coming home with your child. These are optional conferences that can be requested by the teachers or the parents.
Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet

(Looking ahead:  We will take the next two weeks (weeks of Feb. 11th and Feb. 18th) to learn and say the Apostles’ Creed.  Your child may say it all at once or break it into two parts. I thought I would share it this week just in case your child wants to start learning it.)

Part 1:  I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.  And in Jesus Christ his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell.  The third day he rose again from the dead.

Part 2:  He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father almighty.  From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting.
