Newsletter for the week of November 26th

Memory work:
The Lord is near to all who call on Him, to all who call on Him in truth.    Psalm 145:18

November 26, 2018

Dear Parents,
Welcome back!  I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving break. I enjoyed spending lots of quality time with my St. Louis family and friends.  Now we have four weeks and until our Christmas break begins. These will be very busy times!
This week we will take a quick look at our government and at rules and laws in our Social Studies curriculum. Then, next week we will begin our Christmas around the World unit with our country reports.  Please let me know if you need any additional resources or assistance. Mrs. Ladd shared with me a website to help with Christmas traditions.  The web address is www.whychristmas.com.  Also, if you need other country information, go to Mrs. Ladd’s blog page (click on her name on the CCLS website), click on her websites tab and scroll down to see all of the country links that she has listed.
This Wednesday, we will take an afternoon field trip to Global Foods grocery store in Kirkwood (located on North Kirkwood Road next to Walgreen’s).  This is a very interesting store with foods from all over the world.  The purpose of the trip is to see the variety of foods and to allow the students to look for and possibly purchase foods from their country or a food that they would like to try. It is also a good lesson in spending money and receiving change. It is suggested that each student bring $3.00-$5.00 for spending money. I have several parents who are joining us or meeting us there to help with the shopping.  We can use as many assistants as possible.  Just let me know if you will be joining us.  We will leave school around 12:30 and arrive at the store at 12:45.  We will spend about an hour there.
In math, we will finish up our addition fact review and move on to subtraction.  We will also be working with polygons this week as well as measuring line segments.
Next Monday, December 3rd, we will be going to Laclede Groves Nursing Home to sing some Christmas songs for the residents.  It is always very warm there, so please dress your child in short sleeves and/or layers to be peeled off as your child gets warm. Our plans are to leave at 1:40 and to return by 2:45.
Santa’s Workshop is next week and we will be shopping on either Thursday or Friday.   More information will follow about that.
This week and into next week, we will be collecting canned goods for Kirk Kare.  I have challenged the students to bring in at least 4 items each and we should easily meet our school goal of 1200 cans.  These items may come to school at any time.
Remember that the end of the quarter is December 21st.  That means that all of the service project sheets should be turned in before the Christmas break.  At this time of year, I am sure that there are lots of service opportunities.  Have fun completing your project.
I was once again reminded of what a very special place our school is when I read a Family Circus cartoon.  The little girl arrives home crying and says "I needed a hug at school today, Mommy... But Mrs. Clarke said she's not allowed to do that." How special it is that we can begin and end our day with hugs, sharing God's love with each other, here at CCLS.
Yours in Christ,
Janet Leet
